Botherations and Goodness

Things not going as planned—even when to my possible benefit. Possible is the key word.
Got a response back from teacher of on-line course: yes, I got an F for assignment and quiz for week 2. But she would be happy to withdraw those, and I’m to let her know when I’m ready to take the chapter 2 quiz. Oy.
So my Puritan Temperance side says: she gave you another shot, take the gift, and see how the next two weeks go.
Buut, wah, I don’t want to give up my spare time for the rest of Spring. I want time for disciplined self study of other topics.
Sooo…have decided to skim through each chapter, and submit homework and quizzes as fast as possible, when the time is available (don’t have XP on my computer at work, and I’m hesitating to lug that moose of a book to work each day.). If I flunk, then I flunk.
Process was as follows: got off train, got home, did 20 minutes yoga, (because that is one of my self-assigned projects that has to stick.).
Sat down at computer, turned on NPR stream to catch the news (found two stories to link), and skimmed through 70 pages of the Chapter 3 (can’t do chapter #2 until teacher tell me the assigned case study).
Skimmed over chapter comprehension goals printed at the start of each chapter, then the titles of the major chapter divisions. Went back over again, picking up sub divisions, screen prints and comments, numbered/bulleted lists, and sentences with bold glossary words and definitions. This at least gave me the idea of what was wanted, and where to find it.
Will go back through chapter tonight, picking up first and last sentences of paragraphs to get a better idea, then attempt the on-line quiz. Quizes take 30 minutes, and usually include essay questions. You are encouraged to save often---but once you save, you can’t change your answer.
If anyone has further cheap/fast/dirty study suggestions, would be appreciated. And thank you to
aleeceh for suggestions and opinions. She’s better than Google, and definitely better than the textbook glossary.
And btw, I finally found reference to “duocentric” relating to operating systems:
“Duocentric Interface :
• Focus on the document rather than the application being executed
• Expand role of OS by moving capabilities from the application to system services
o Example: click on document to run program
o Effort to assure that every application program responds in similar ways to user actions. “
Smaller golems in the gears last night :
1. CANNOT get streaming from KoL radio. Screw the game, I want to listen to the music. And occasional interviews with bass players. PowerDVD not cooperating with my computer at all.
2. A week without good Regency /Austen fan fic is like a week without…really godawful juicy dialog. Yes, fan fic. Some people drink MD when life gets low and cheap: I read fan fiction. Can you say pathetic?
Well, if reading fan fic is akin to alcoholism and cheap alcohol---then I am starting to encounter the equivalent of prison Jesus juice. Holy Mother of Anne de Bourgh, I don’t know whether it gets worse if the don’t read the books, or if they actually do.
Ah well. When I have time, I can finally indulge myself in some heavier diaglog: Henry James, best Austen fan fic writer you’ll ever encounter on-line or in the classroom. (Note: Currently working my way through The Europeans, which is another reason NOT to spend time this semester in an Windows class!)
OK, must finish work. Will hold lunch break until after 2pm, when I can go to Farmer’s Market, and play “Spot the Cheese and
groblek”

Date: 2006-02-01 09:26 pm (UTC)But may I point out, Mr. Twain said, "Every time I read Jane Austen..." which means he did it more than once, and anticipated doing it again! So there! The man may have been a cynic, but he probably skimmed through the novels, searching for JaneSnarkisms.
My two cents, and probably deserves 5 cents change.
