Writing takes a long time. Probably longer than it should, because I'm tweaking sentences instead of just writing (although as some of you have witnessed my spelling and online grammar mash ups...)
And research. There is no reason to stop and do research while I'm writing. Just write and figure how I get from point A to point B in a story.
Story is set in LA 1956. OK, the Red line was stopped running near the end of the 40's---that's important. But did I need to change the apartment setting from Wilshire to Figueroa because St. Vincent De Paul is on Adams off Fig, so that the character could feasibly take a bus? And I picked St Vincent because I needed--no, wanted--a cathedral that would have been old and still in existance then.
Did I need to confirm that Revlon's "Fire and Ice" lipstick line had debuted by then (1953), but that Covergirl products would not be available until 1958? And did I really need to confirm how heavy makeup might have been applied by respectable professional working girls at that time, to determine if thick (but not heavy, this was 1956 not 1960) eyeliner would be used---or rather, NOT used by the character in question.
Um, not really. Back to work. But I now have a new word in architecture: Churriquesque.
