Need comp advicce

Laptop is dead. HP Pavilion N4554, bought circa '01, '02. Hardly ever used until last fall.

Suspect hard drive is dead. Spousal unit attempted to open it up to get to hard drive--opened up all easy access openings...no access to hard drive.

(Yes, is former IT /hardware specialist, used to beat up computers up until 2002. Is allowed to do this without me screaming in fear "whaddya doing!?")

Spousal unit would like some recommendation before he utilized BMFH. He's just in the mood.

He's hesitant about opening the casing further as there may be parts attached to the casing that were not meant to be bitch slapped apart.

Yes, I looked at Craigslist last night. It's going to be a few months before we can replace this thing, fuck it.

Find the manual for the machine on HP's web site. It will tell how to replace the drive. I have an HP Pavilion N5490, and its drive is accessed by removing the keyboard. I don't remember how we did that exactly, but the manual we found online gave clear instructions.

I've got a fair bit of experience on how to disassemble these - if it's like the N5000 series, there's a bit of work involved in opening it up. Try pointing him here for the service manuals. http://www.martini-man.com/Pub/ The Omnibook XE3 & the Pavilion N5000 series are the same thing - I'd start with that.
