Her blog name. Refers to the scientific name for magpies, “chatty and alighting on gleaming things” per her blog. Also noted by her friends that it is a measurement of type/font…and Pica is a crack head for all things type, moveable type, printing, fonts, calligraphy, bookbinding, etc.

Hers (well, hers and her husband Numenius') was the first blog I encountered, and one devoted to writing about place. Pica is a woman devoted to nature and environment, in a scientific and studied fashion. She is a birder, and happily spends part of her Christmas holiday doing the Audubon count.

She is deeply involved and loving of the land, wildlife and people around her. She writes about being aware of where you live, in city or country. I learned about this type of heart when she and I took a poetry class together. She and I came to appreciate the haibun, which is fortunate, as she is a talented watercolorist. She’s also avid and rabid about baseball, travel, and language. She was born in the U.S. but raised in Spain in British schools (and an accent to match); she came from New England to Davis to meet a man she met on line; they wed in 2004.

She also used to be a cat hater (strong dislike at least), until two captured feral kittens invaded her home in 2004.

I’ve been reading her blog of the last month or two. Here’s what I missed.

Note 1 Feb for her occasional forays into stream of thought writing. Normally she is precise in her writing.

and when she wrote about it…in a sonnet under special restrictions
(“Avoiding the Latinate”) http://www.magpienest.org/feathersofhope/269/avoiding-the-latinate

And when she found the joy of cats, after all these years:
….well, just search for ‘kittens’ and from May through Fall of 2004 will contains tidbits about growing her growing fascination with the feral kittens.

Through she and her husband, I found these wonderful sites:
All about watercolor http://www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/water.html
Her December post about sketchcrawl http://www.magpienest.org/feathersofhope/953/davis-sketchcrawl-this-sunday
And the link to the site: http://www.sketchcrawl.com/

I miss this woman a great deal. I hope to rearrange my life and times a bit to go sketching and writing with her, and exploring the local landscape.

Just wanted to mention someone who was in my life, whom I wish you all knew, and whom I wish I kept.
