Life as usual.

Went to counselor last night. Felt optimistic about school, "I can do anything".
Came home, woke up this morning (day off) to back aches and messy house and remembering the reason why I'd like to quit this class (besides the work and frustration level).

Actually, I don't want to quit--I told the counselor I'd like to stay in the class, ease off my stress, even if I flunk (C is likely at this point). Sent similar msg to teacher last night, need to check the mail, and see what he wants to do.

Went to get car checked this morning; starting was a bit sluggish this past week. Tune up done, a little over $300. Not bad, but will not be able to get the lawn removed as planned; at least not until after April.

Was not expecting to come home and find a dead TV. Going to break the news to Snuffy when he gets home. I'm going to suggest we do without a TV for awhile. That would also save on Netflix and cable.

I think the lawn is coming out next year. But, the sun's out, and I drove through Cordelia on the way home today. I need more country drives.

If you have a computer at home, you don't need tv. Or netflix. Just use hulu.com or the network websites. Thats what we do :)

Hulu's a good call. Gets rid of several birds with one stone, and if there's something you REALLY want to see that's not on hulu, there's a Blockbuster on every corner.

Yep we made that call. I'm going to miss PBS. Must explore their website and see if they offer anything on the net.

Are you taking the classes for a particular something (promotion requirement, etc) or for your own interest?

Death to the Lawn! I'm killing mine--putting down chips and salsa. No, wait. Chips outside the fence, granite inside the fence.

Was going to pay the local guy to take it out with a sod cutter, then spray with Round up. THEN drought proof plants, gravel. The boulder landscaping would have been too expensive.

I may ask him to cut my lawn though, so he totally doesn't lose the whole job. Helps his income and I don't have to rent a mower---and he does a better job. And dammit, helps his income.

Ah. Mom heard of this weird plan (one of the courses on gardening she takes) to put down overlapping newspaper then chips. Since Mom owns the property, I'm doing it her way. The weight and lack of sun kills the grass without taking it out--leaving the rotted plant material as fertilizer.
Doesn't work so well battling wood sorrel.

I'm thinking of ditching my front lawn as well, but not until I have a plan.

Have you considered a native plant garden? There are plenty of local plants that grow just fine with the weather and water as it is.

Actually, I've been out to the native gardens at the arboretum several times, which gave me the original idea. It's just a matter of design, and getting the HOA approval.

Not much you can use as a replacement for regular grass (well, there was one mentioned in a Sunset magazine, but it's not cheap. Native, but not cheap.)

That's a major bitch. I wanted a native plants garden---and the lawn guys son, (who is the landscaper), noted the irony that it can cost more to obtain native plants over all purpose drought resistant stuff.

However, check out the UCDE arb site for ideas, and I'll lend you my Sunset Wester guide if you ever need it.

*grin* planning lawn replacement...I'm up for that. :) Besides, you have a miniscule front lawn.

And yes, native grasses, a number of herbs, various succulents, will manage without much attention. Depends on how 'neat' you want things to look.

That may depend in part on my HOA, but I'd love some input.

*hugs*

Sounds all kinds of productive.

I suppose the neighbors would disapprove of removing the lawn by solarizing it under black tarps all summer? You could throw a few bricks and boards on it...shuffle them from time to time...and just tell them you're remodeling. :p

Haven't had, or missed, TV since C moved up to Davis (I think that's 4 years now). And with hulu.com, I get to miss it even less. The iMac is set up as our DVD player.

You could, for a change of venue/scenery, always come down here to visit the hot tub tonight. (*Grin*)
