Started these on Friday with the Wikidipity, but never had time to post (hell, I only left the building once!)

****************
Friday was trying to research Flannery O'Conner at Wikipedia. Resulting Wikidipity: Flannery O'Connor to Southern Gothic to Sling Blade to Kaiser Blade.

And--Flannery O'Connor to St. Thomas Aquinas to Thomist.
Also, St. Thomas Aquinas to Summae Thelolgica, and to Plato and Aristotle.
Oddly, I have not gone to topic of Catholocism.

Note: "Aquinas defined the four cardinal virtues as prudence, temperance, justice, and fortitude." Go me! I'm a cardinal virtue! Can I have my big red hat?

Oh, and by the way: "The cardinal virtues are natural and revealed in nature, and they are binding on everyone."

I think I'm going to need more than a big red hat.

Oh, a bit more: St. Thomas Aquinas to Principle of Double Effect. Hmm. Can this be used in O'Connor Essay; does this reflect in any of her stories?

Mmm. Must read much non-wiki on this woman...but yeah, I think I want to read more of her work. She's an interesting comparison to Hawthorne.

Stop me if you've heard this (from Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar):

A defendant was on trial for murder. There was strong evidence indicating guilt, but there was no corpse. In his closing statement, the defense attorney declared,

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury...I have a suprise for you all--within one minute, the person presumed dead will walk into this courtroom!"

The attorney looked to the courtroom door; the stunned jurors looked as well. A minute passed, but nothing happened. Finally, the attorney said,

"Actually, I made up the business about the alleged victim walking in. But you all looked at the door with anticipation--which means you must all have a reasonable doubt that this crime took place. I put it to you that if you have any reasonable doubt, you must return a verdict of 'not guilty'."

The jury retired to deliberate, and returned in three minutes---with a verdict of guilty.

"How could you do that?", bellowed the lawyer. "You all had some doubt--you all stared at the door!"

The foreman replied, "Oh, we all looked---but your client didn't."

I REALLY need to get out more: Can anyone recommend good delis or cafes, or good Italian restaurants in the Napa, Sonoma, or into Petalum area. Viansa is beautiful, but expensive and a bit crowded on weekends. (Last time I was there, many years ago, was on a foggy winter day. Lovely and quiet, and worked on pastel sketches.)

Hmmm, do we know ANYone who could recommend something in NAPA? Buehler?

Reason for the query: I woke up in a bad depression, blew off all chores, homework and necessary shopping, packed up camera and paints and hit the road. Just drove, and kept driving toward anywhere that looked like country in my old cruising paths in Sonoma County.

If I wake up early on a Saturday, I'm shooting for the coast next time.
Screw the gas. Screw my carbon footprint.
I've been scrimping and saving for gas and green for over 10 years now. I miss day tripping.

And oddly enough, my horoscope for the day:

This is a fine day for a spiritual retreat, whether you go to church, have some quiet time in nature or just spend time at home without a lot of distractions. It may be challenging at first to settle your energy, but you should be able to relax once you get a few chores out of the way. Don't worry about getting lost in your dreams; it's a perfectly safe journey and you'll feel better when you return home.

Gas is important. Carbon footprints are important. But being happy is important too.

I can point you at several neat pubs in the Bay and Sacramento, but I'm afraid I have no idea about Napa.

Read/Review please: http://www.napavalleyregister.com/articles/2008/03/16/news/local/doc47dd95ace1589913378292.txt

My childhood "Italian Food" was thoroughly cooked angel hair pasta with Ragu Super Mushroom and sauteed ground beef--and this is what I picture every time Barnabas wants pasta for dinner.

I want to go get some of this guy's stuff but I know I need guidance, by which I mean somebody-with-Italian-heritage-eating-with-me. :-)

We also have Genova Delicatessen and The Food Mill, the former I've gone to and the latter I keep driving past but haven't stopped. If you want Upvalley there's deli stuff at the Oakville Grocery and V.Sattui in StH.

Gloria Ferrer has pretty views from their balcony. It's in the Carneros District (South Sonoma), and thus *hooray* probably within thirty miles of you. Open 10-5, Sun-Sat.

Yes. I failed my "map skills" roll and therefore did not notice that GF is a mere mile-and-a-half north from Viansa. Grandma and I visited GF four years ago and were unimpressed by the tour, but the tasting room prices are quite reasonable.
