Snuffy and I got to Dickens about 1.30 or 2p yesterday. Rather good time. Saw Crummmels, saw good stagining of books. Got some very nice greetings from people, including one young man who prompted me to drop an F bomb in the middle of London. Damned Americans.

Very annoyed I still can't seem to interact with characters. Last week and this past visit, even put on a badge as a Time Traveller. Still don't know how to approach some characters. (And the damned shame is, the most interesting fictional folks are the one's you REALLY shouldn't approach. Best contact I had last weekend was with Fagin...)

Is there any polite and discrete way to collect calling cards from those whom might have them?

***************
This weekend. Trying to make it feel like Christmas. Which means trying to make it feel like the midnight magic it was 40 years agon. I think the outlook is impossible to duplicate, but will try.

Another thought is to revive the Solstice reflections I did, for a few years. I missed the real solstice--but I thought that my need for some sense of "wow", rejuvenation, and new new path and adventure to follow....that might fit it in with my "Christmas Mystery" need.

So, I hope to stay up late tonight, to midnight. Going to read an old folk tale book on Christmas folklore, that always brought the magic for me. And it turns out, tonight at midnight will be one of the brightest to view Mars.

I'm going to wrap up and watch the stars tonight. Maybe talk to myself and them. Or, as I did at Bodega in Nov, just listen for rhythms and watch whatever crosses my view---just let Temperance fall aside, and just "be" there.

11.20pm. Went out shortly hafter 11pm. Mars quite high, south of the Moon (which is glowing like a bulb, no halo, and not that cold yet). Mars quite bright, and coral pink.

The best way to collect calling cards is probably to give them one of yours.

Ah, but I'm not a character.
(No comment, you!)

But, that's a thought. Still not sure how I would present one. And do disreputable characters give out cards?

As a customer, you can do whatever you damned well please.

As a customer you could come as Queen Victoria if you wanted, or Sherlock Holmes even. If you want to play a character as a customer, that is totally cool and fine. And, if you wanted to develop that character a bit, there is no shortage of people who would be happy to help you.

As to giving out cards, it is easy to justify it as anyone who wants people to think that they are reputable would give out cards. In reality, at fair, anybody who wants to give out cards can come up with a justification.

For example, let's say that you work as a maid. People come to your mistresses house all of the time and leave their cards. Once they've been presented, they really aren't needed, so they probably get thrown out rather than kept forever. So, you have a ready supply of all sorts of cards, for when you want to borrow your mistresses clothes, go out on the town and put on airs. You just have to keep track of whose card you have at the moment.

This, of course, could lead to all sorts of humorous theater.

The best way to get people to interact with you is to dress up. It doesn't have to be historically accurate, it just needs to be something that says "I dressed up! I WANT to be here!" Time games is nice, but honestly, I don't see them. A santa hat, reindeer ears or a loud christmas sweater, however, goes a long way- it tells me the person wearing it has a sense of humor and wants to get involved.
