Sep. 5th, 2009 09:47 amRamblings at 5.30 am. Still intend to enjoy the weekend, but (keep in mind I'm still a bit sleepy).
Great musician with a varied career, Norton Buffalo. I've followed him when I discovered Davis, The Palms, Blues, Sacramento Blue Society--and harp (harmonica). Went to see one of his shows back at the Palms in the very early 90's, because he was held up as a master of the instrument, both diatonic and chromatic. He's also a fantastic keyboardist, and expert at mixing and producing and writing. He has an exquisite voice that goes from bluesy growls to rich silk, baritone to tenor. He's been a sideman to damn near everyone in pop, country, blues, rock, folk...Hawaiian (George Kahumoko)...everybody, and in soundtracks for TV and movies. Every year he played at Les Paul's birthday bashes--as a performer of merit, and as a friend of Les. He is also one of the guys that will donate his time and talents to any local charity and gets invited out to the big ones--Bread and Roses used to rely on him. Hell, he used to teach in prisons.
In the 1990's he went through rough times in family and health (accidents while on tour that injured his hands, knees, and ruptured an ear drum). But a new marriage and new side jobs brought him back on track and raised his spirits. Hell, heard him a few months ago on Prairie Home Companion with Elvin Bishop. He's been touring all over the country with long time friend Steve Miller, and had just settled down to R&R before more gigs started up.
R&R turned into resting and getting better. Got checked into the hospital for pneumonia last week. Pneumonia turned out to be cancer. Will see what happens is the current prognosis.
I wanted to see this guy awhile ago at the Palms in June, but opted to see Saffire, as it was their farewell tour. Couldn't see both in the same month, due to monetary budget.
Dammit.
Note to self, as a music fan, and human being: Get out and do what you can, and what you want. Cuz you can't budget the time.
