(Part 1 as I will think of more later)

Bread machines to experiment with
Silly Peanut Kitty loves his Nerf Gatling Gun (yes, it was presented to Mr. Snuffy--Peanutty Goodness just seems to think it's delightful being pinged with foam darts).

Kidnappings and lacy bits and clockwise Thai Iced Tea (we're English Country Dancers--we do everything clockwise).

Mr. Snuffy's cranberry sauce. Actual sauce, not jelly or preserves. Cranberries, orange juice, lots of pumpkin pie spice. No additional sweeteners. nom nom nom...

Finally getting out of morning funk, and eating breakfast: last of the meatballs, reheated over collard greens and garnet yams. nom nom nom....

Tea. With honey.

Or, Miso Salad.

1. I still say Student Vegetarian Cookbook is the best gift you can give anyone. Do yourself or a friend a favor.

2. Rick Steves travel is having a sale. $4.95 for single DVD of past episodes (usually 6-8 episodes on a theme disc). I'm getting two Irelands/Scotlands (one for Storyteller), one England, one France and Benelux. Maybe European History 101. Anyone want something thrown into the order? Otherwise, sale lasts through 21 Dec.

3. Why does Magical Trevor remind me of Tobias the Adequate? And I've got to remember to start reading his LJ.

4. And missed this one for your Thanksgiving Table:
Sushi that can double as your waiter

5. Reason to have cheap steak knives: Best instrument in the world to fillet the pith outta citrus fruit.

6. We're having a nice simple dinner. But I keep looking at the small bits of leftovers and thinking: I can make something out of that.
I may be eating leftovers, and nosh on T-day work tomorrow.

Birthday!

Happy Birthday Aleece H!!!

This is your birthday song.
It isn't very long.
Hey!
temperance14: (Default)
A public announcement:

Iiiiit's still your birthday song,
which isn't very long
but still going strong
is your birthday month, and 'month' doesn't rhyme with anything but it's your birthday month so that can't be wrong.
Hey!

And you arranged a pretty good birthday month, because most of us are taking two days off from work to celebrate, and roast the Izzy turkey and make LaBelle cranberry sauce,

And a bunch of folks are having recreating Victorian London for several weekends in your honor, because we know you have good proper Victorian sensibilites--well, presuming that means you'd rather be doing knees up Mother Brown at Mad Sal's and love drinking gallons of tea.

All in all, nice job dear. Happy Birthday...still.

In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses row on row...

Forgive me if the clip is mostly trivial or light,
or if the lines are taken from a poem that is more of a tribute to continuing the battle (in a very useless war).

Last year (or before?) I posted my favorite from Wilfrend Owens, "Dulce et Decorum Est", in memory of my paternal grandfather.

***********
Better yet: Rudyard Kipling

Tommy

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

For those participating, my thoughts and prayers to you on Yom Kippur.

...if that is any kind of salutation.

and (yeah, none of you expect this) apologies to those whose birthdays I missed.
I mean, like in the last 2 (3?!) months. I had a bout of loose wiring in the Communicate with Friends section of my brain.

I need to post a mass Hippo Birdie.

I, unfortunately, must be at class tonight--but yesterday's drive put me in the right contemplative mood.

What, if anything, do my friends have planned to observe the settling in of the year? Did you do anything this weekend.

Just asking. Actually feeling more mellow today.

Happy Pi Day to [livejournal.com profile] barnabas_truman.

I checked NPR for ways to celebrate...and found to my distress that they are holding Pi Day at the Exploratorium from 1 to 3pm today! And I'm over here!

Pi Parade gathers at 1.30, and rumbles forward at 2pm.

And for those of you in Second Life, yep, they've got a spot for you!
Well, there's always Science Friday on NPR....and people who know their pi...one of them up to 50 digits.

Oh, and Happy Birthday Albert. Don't know why Google didn't say so, but Happy Birthday. Which Google refuses to translate unless you input happy and birthday separately. Glücklich Geburtstag!!

Happy Anniversary [livejournal.com profile] kay_gmd and [livejournal.com profile] groblek!!

We talked about this on Saturday night---and I never posted on Sunday!
I can't believe it's been a year since we all shared that wonderful day with you two and your families.

I think the world of you two, and don't know what I would do without you two for support and love.
